After 9/11 attacks, local judge’s Catholic faith inspired ‘Patriot Week’ celebration

LAKE ORION  Since 2009, Judge Michael Warren has been trying to encourage Americans to rediscover their roots as a people and the founding principles that built the nation. 

Americans once had a robust civic calendar, Judge Warren notes, marked with key events such as George Washington’s birthday, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day and Armistice Day, but now those dates have either been largely forgotten or relegated to occasions to have a mattress sale.

Recent polls have shown a dismaying ignorance of civics and American history which is coming home to roost. Less than half of the people can identify the three branches of government: the legislative, the executive, and the judicial. This might explain the vitriol, death threats, and violence that are spewing at our judicial officers.

Senate Passes Peters, Kennedy Resolution Designating Patriot Week

U.S. Senators Gary Peters (D-MI) and John Kennedy (R-LA) applauded Senate passage of a bipartisan resolution they introduced designating September 11th through September 17th as Patriot Week. Cofounded by Judge Michael Warren of Oakland County, Michigan, Patriot Week would honor the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks, celebrate Constitution Day on the 17th and encourage students to learn more about the history of the United States.

Western Michigan University Cooley Law School Celebrates Constitution Day

In Lansing, the law school hosted a luncheon to discuss federalism and limited government with featured speaker Hon. Michael Warren from the Oakland County Circuit Court. During his remarks, Warren reminded students of the founding principals on which the constitution was based.

Patriot Week Library Initiative Featured In Oakland County Bar Annual Report

The Troy Public Library built a program series and book displays around the Patriot Week Initiative theme and were delighted at the interest on the part of the community. Attendance was high at our programs, as so many people have an interest in history, especially as it informs our present day. The Patriot Week programming enhanced our offerings to the public and we were glad to be a part of it.
