| Time to Think: The Declaration of Independence recognizes as a self-evident truth that “governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. . . .” Take a few minutes to contemplate by yourself or discuss with a friend the meaning of this quote.What does the Declaration mean when it declares that governments are instituted among men? Why does a government derive its just powers from the consent of the people? Are there governments today that are not instituted among men? or that do not have just powers or oppose the consent of the people? Will you work to ensure our government remains grounded in the Social Compact? Action Activities: Short: Read the preamble to the Constitution: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” Medium: Also dedicate yourself to voting becoming informed about each upcoming election (local, state, and federal), and voting in the election. Today, do some research on the next upcoming election. Make sure to volunteer for at least a few hours for a campaign in the next election. Long: Fill out the chart in the appendix and distribute to friends, family members, and educators. Have each person fill it out and discuss each other’s answers. |
